Is U.S. Power Declining or Transforming? American Democracy and Its Global Role
On the eve of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, many debates are emerging over the evolution of American politics and the country’s role on the international stage. In a context marked by deep internal divisions, growing geopolitical tensions, and intensifying rivalries between powers, one question persists: is the country at a turning point in its history? America at 250: At Home and Beyond approaches this question from this perspective, offering an analysis of political, social, and international dynamics, while also reflecting on the transformations and challenges facing the United States as this symbolic milestone approaches.
On this occasion, Gideon Rose, professor at Columbia University, former editor of Foreign Affairs, and author of the book’s postscript, answers our questions:
- How has American democracy evolved since independence? Can the United States still be considered as a democratic model?
- What role does the United States currently play on the international stage? Are we witnessing a decline in U.S. power, or is it undergoing a transformation?
- How does the perception of democratic decline in the United States shape public opinion and the way opposition movements organize themselves?
