Geopolitical challenges of Earth's system shifts
Geopolitics unfolds on a planet that is now experiencing profound upheavals. The transgression of certain limits that underpin its habitability for human societies foreshadows the onset of shocks, crises and disruptions within the international system, and may lead some actors — including states — to redefine their understanding of the world, as well as their strategies and interests.
Since 2010, the Climate, Environment and Security Programme has examined these interdependencies: while it explores the consequences of political and geopolitical decisions on natural systems, it also seeks to analyse the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss on human, national and international security.
Grounded in a systemic understanding of climate security issues, the programme’s approach focuses on the analysis of emerging risks, the identification of threats and forward-looking assessment, as well as on the development of operational recommendations designed to support strategic decision-making.
Through research, the publication of policy briefs, the organisation of conferences open to experts and the wider public, and the delivery of seminars, the programme aims to foster reflection geared towards strengthening the resilience of societies and stakeholders (ministries, government agencies, international organisations and companies) in the face of climate change.
