Climate vulnerability in Latin America and the Caribbean

1 Reading time

The Latin America and Caribbean region is on the front line of global warming. Most countries in the region have a high vulnerability index to global warming (between 40 and 60 on the ND-GAIN index), exacerbated by low resilience, often linked to the limited resources available to the countries concerned to combat the consequences of extreme weather events. Hundreds of climate events (fires, floods, storms, etc.) have struck the continent since 2000, affecting the entire territory. The countries in the region are attempting to adopt a multilateral approach, notably through the Escazú (Costa Rica) agreements on access to information, public participation, and access to justice on environmental issues. However, several major countries (notably Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Chile) have not ratified these agreements.
