Preservation of indigenous territories in the Brazilian Amazon and protected areas in Latin America

Nine of Brazil’s 26 states are covered by the Amazon rainforest, which accounts for about half of its territory. This area, which is minor from a demographic point of view, is populated by a number of indigenous peoples, whose territories are subject to different administrative statuses: approved, delimited, declared, or under review. These regions are threatened by deforestation, which is gradually encroaching on Amazonian territory. The issue of deforestation raises the broader question of the protection of territories and natural areas in Latin America, where there are significant disparities between states.
