Karl-Heinz KAMP

Dr. Karl-Heinz Kamp is the Director of the Research Division of the NATO Defense College in Rome.

He studied History and Political Sciences at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn and he holds a Ph.D. from the University of the German Armed Forces, Ham-burg with a dissertation NATO’s nuclear planning procedures.

He started his career in 1986 at the German Council of Foreign Affairs (DGAP) in Bonn. In 1988 he has been research fellow with the Center for Science and Internati-onal Affairs (CSIA), John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA. In September 1988, he joined the Research Institute of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Bonn. From 1992 to 2000, he was Head of the Foreign- and Security Policy Research Section of the Foundation and from 2000 to 2003 he directed its International Planning Staff. In 2003, he became the Security Policy Coordinator of the Foundation in Berlin, and in November 2007, he joined the NATO Defense College in Rome.

From 1997 to 1998, Dr. Kamp was on a temporary assignment with the Planning Staff of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1999, he has been teaching political sciences at the University of Cologne.

He is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the German Atlan-tic Society, the German Council on Foreign Relations and other national and interna-tional institutions. He is also member of Editorial Board of the British journal Con-temporary Security Policy. In 2005, the German Minister of Defense appointed him to the Advisory Board of the Federal Academy for Security Policy.

He has published extensively on security policy issues – particularly on NATO and on nuclear questions - including articles in Foreign Policy, Financial Times, Sur-vival, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, International Herald Tribune, Washington Quarterly, Internationale Politik, Strategic Review, International Defense Review, Die Welt, Christian Science Monitor, Defense News, Neue Zuercher Zeitung, Focus, Wall Street Journal.
